Thanksgiving 365: Volunteers Fast on Bread and Water to Reduce Hunger on Westside
Fundraiser supports Inner City Development’s Emergency Food Pantry
SAN ANTONIO, Nov 1 2013/Inner City Development/- A group of volunteers has committed to raise $1,000 each and will fast until they do so. The group goal is $30,000, the amount of money needed to fund Inner City Development’s Emergency Food Pantry for 365 days. The fast begins on November 5 at 10:00 AM. There will be a kickoff at Inner City at this time and volunteers will be available for interviews.
We are concerned that demand at the emergency food pantry will increase, given the pending cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), formerly known as the Food Stamps program. About $5 billion in cuts took effect November 1, and the House has already passed a bill that cuts another $39 billion from the program over the next 10 years.
Inner City is conservatively projected to serve over 70,000 meals this year to families who are in crisis. To meet that demand, volunteers are trying to reach an overall fundraising target of $30,000 before Thanksgiving. A number of community leaders are participating this year including: Darryl Byrd, CEO of SA2020, Alvaro del Norte lead singer for punk band Piñata Protest, and Asia Ciaravino, CEO of The Playhouse San Antonio.
“In our experience, people are really generous to respond to the issue of hunger at Thanksgiving time. But then we see that emergency food pantries become challenged to stock the shelves after the season. Thanksgiving 365 is an effort to keep Inner City Development’s food pantry stocked all year round and to raise the consciousness that hunger is not a Thanksgiving issue, but an issue all year round”. –Patti Radle, Co-Executive Director of Inner City Development.
